Publix Trip (Not so pleasant)

I normally go to Publix on Sunday mornings to take advantage of the penny item but I ventured out today since my husband wanted fresh fish for dinner. I had a very rude cashier, something that I have never encountered at a Publix before. As soon as I got to the line, she saw that I had coupons and asked for them --- my husband joked around saying we had lots of coupons. She sarcastically said, I should have known and then turned to another cashier to say "another one". I had  15 coupons, I am sorry but that is not a lot. I know there are quite a few people out there that really bring a bad name to couponing but please, we arent all like that. It is never my intent to rip off the store, hoard items, etc. I want to save on items that I use on a daily basis. My total was over $100 (meat, beer and produce pushed the limits) --- I spent quite a bit of my hard earned money --- Krogers would have loved to have had me. Enough ranting, here are the deals that I got:

Cocoa Butter - 16 oz bottle - Free with Baby Club Coupon (saved $3.49)
Lysol Cleaner - 2 bottles B1G1 - .70 total after (2) 50 cent coupons.
5 Smart Ones Meals - $9.40 after $2 off 5 entrees coupons
Hunts Tomatoes - 6 cans B1G1 - $1.14 after (3) 50 cent coupons
Betty Crocker Potatoes  - 2 Boxes B1G1 - .19 cents total after (2) 40 cent coupons.
2 cans of Crescent Rolls 3 for $5 - .67 each after (2) $1 coupons
2 Dole fruit bowls  - $.99 each after (2) 50 cent coupons
Rubbing Alcohol - free with baby club coupon (saved .85)
Hand Sanitizer - free with baby club coupon (saved .99)

I didnt list all 70 items, just the really good deals.

My total before Coupons: $151.14
Saved: $43.73
Total OOP: $107.41

I spent more today than I have in quite a long time. It proves that my husband can really blow the budget out of the water and I dont have the will power to stop him. Oh well, you only live once!

Update ---- I really need to track my purchases so I am listing all of the items that I purchased:

I am glad that I listed these out, lots of things seem to have found their way into the cart. I wasnt fully aware of the total price, especially the beer and ham. I knew I shouldn't have left him alone while I was picking out my frozen meals for the week. I guess my husband is breaking me in for when a child will do this.

Target Price Break Find

OK, I found a wonderful deal at Target. I went in intending to use a $2 off 2 Glade products coupon. Target has the gel scents candle holders on a price break for $1.50 each (normally $4). I snatched up 6 of the holders ( opened a couple of boxes to get the $2 coupons). I ended up paying $3.00 plus tax on all 6 items ---- an amazing $21 savings! My teammates at work will be getting Glade candle holders for Christmas --- of course I will get some candles to throw in there but I should skate through these gifts with minimal out of pocket, I am loving this!!!

Saved 82% at Kroger's

I was very excited yesterday when I received my Vocalpoint Kashi Coupons for $3 off Kashi Go Lean Cereal (2 coupons). The excitement grew once I discovered that Krogers has the cereal on sale through Saturday for $3 a box!!! I am all about getting stuff for free so I ventured off to Krogers and bought the following:

2 boxes Kashi Go Lean ( 2 --- $3 off coupons) - paid nada
Huggies 32 count wipes ($2 off coupon) - overage of 1 cent
2 Sister Schubert Rolls (2 ---$1 off coupons) - $1.49/pkg = $2.98

Coupons: $10
Kroger Plus Savings: $4.28
Total Savings: $14.28
Tax: $1.09
Total OOP: $4.06

Apparently I have to pay tax on the pre coupon total ---bummer. If this hadnt been the case, I could have saved another 70 cents at least.

Walgreens Clearance Deal

I stopped by the LaVergne Walgreens this evening to pick up 2 newspapers (needed the extra coupons). I decided to take a stroll through the store to see if there were any great clearance deals out there. I have never been one to purchase clothing at a drug store but couldn't pass up the deal I found. There were yoga pants on clearance, the normal price was $7.99 and I fetched them for $1.99. Being pregnant, these will definitely come in handy for my workout routine. I think that I will hit up a few more stores tomorrow to see if I can find some more.

Healthier Apple Crisp

Over at Eat Better America , I saw a recipe for a healthy version of an Apple Crisp. Of course, with fall there are tons of apples on sale so this recipe would be perfect for taking advantage of an optimal time to purchase apples. I reviewed the nutritional data and yes this is a surprisingly healthy dish that is low in calories, fat and sodium. Here is the scoop straight from the website:

Prep Time:15 min

Start to Finish:50 min

makes:8 servings (about 2/3 cup each)

6 cups sliced unpeeled cooking apples (6 medium)

1/4 cup frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3/4 cup old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats

1/4 cup Gold Medal® whole wheat flour

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup butter or no-trans-fat 68% vegetable oil spread stick, softened

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Reduced-fat vanilla ice cream, if desired

1. Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 8-inch square (2-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix apples, apple juice concentrate and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon until well mixed. Spread in baking dish.

2. In same medium bowl, mix remaining ingredients until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.

3. Bake uncovered 25 to 35 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown. Serve with ice cream.

Adware and Malware Warning

Numerous coupon sites require that you install a coupon printer to download/print coupons. Be careful when downloading as many of these sites attach malware or adware to your computer. I have encountered numerous computer issues from downloading the coupon tools and once I removed the adware/malware, the issues subsided. I run a malware program after each download and sometimes I will remove the coupon program entirely once I have printed my coupons.

To get malware/adware programs, here are two great options. Option One: Go to Ad-Aware in order to get your free malware/adware removal tool. Option Two:  Malwarebytes  is an excellent choice but it does cost $24.95 to install. I am currently running Malwarebytes and it is an awesome tool. I have previously used Ad-Aware and had excellent results as well. There are fortune 500 companies utilizing Malwarebytes so it does have an impecable reputation!

Have fun couponing but remember to protect your computer!

Cheap Haircut and Brow Wax - You get what you pay for!

The Paul Mitchell Hair School in Antioch, TN offers very cheap hair/skin services. I have used the school before for brow waxing and facials, I was never disappointed. Last night, I went in for a "trim" and brow wax since my regular hairdresser wouldn't be available for some time. Well, this time I was a little disappointed. The brow wax was fantastic but the "trim" was not. I just wanted to trim a minimal amount off of the ends of my hair but ended up having an inch taken off and some of the strands are uneven. I cant blame the lady who trimmed my hair, she is a student after all and I knew that going in.

The total price was $15 before tip for brow wax, shampoo, cut and style. That is an amazing price! If you go, be warned that you never know how it will turn out! At least my hair is fixable so no worries here --- well except when I go to my regular hairdresser because she will give me grief for this one!

I can attest to the facials at PM school, they are awesome and a bargain for only $20! Too bad the school doesn't offer massages, I really need one of those :) They also offer cheap manicures (less than $10) and the brow wax service is $7. They offer color services as well starting at $25 but I am not brave enough to try that one out. If you do go to PM, just be warned that you will be in there for quite some time, I was there 1 and 1/2 hours last night but the amount of time spent will definitely save you the salon prices. I could have easily spent $50 or more for the services that I received.

Cheap, Filling and Low Calorie Breakfast

I had a wonderful idea the other day while I was looking at a half eaten loaf of bread that was about to expire. It is hard for 2 people to polish off an entire loaf of bread before it turns bad so I decided to make French Toast and freeze it for quick morning meals. Since I didn't know how this would come out, I only made enough for 2 breakfasts. I tried the French toast this morning and it was surprisingly good. I wont lie and say that it tastes as good as fresh made French toast but it was still delicious. Here is the recipe and the cost breakdown:

For 5 breakfasts:

10 slices of Publix Light Wheat Bread (end of the week bread - approximately 1/2 loaf) @1.69/ bag x .50 = .85

4 large eggs beaten - 1.19/dozen x .33 = .39

1/2 cup of Purity Sweet Acidophilus Milk - 2.99 (normally 3.99 at Food Lion plus $1 off coupon from PurityLovers.Com) - .09

2 tsp. Imitation Vanilla - approximately 1 cent (purchased awhile back and I know I paid less than $1.50)

2 tsp. Ground cinnamon - approximately 1 cent (came from a 99 cent container)

Preheat griddle to 375 degrees

Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla and cinnamon together in a large bowl - may need to add additional milk depending on how dry your bread is. Dip slices of bread in mixture. Cook until golden on each side (approximately 3 to 5 minutes total).

One cooked, lay the individual slices on paper towels to wick away moisture. Wrap the toast in paper towels and then freeze. To reheat, place in a toaster on medium setting until heated through.

Breakdown per meal (2 slices) = .27 cents which is much better and healthier than the McDonald's dollar menu.

Calories - approximately 115

I use 1/4 c of Aunt Jemima Lite Syrup - calories = 50

I also throw in a nectarine or peach - calories = 60

For less than 300 calories, you can have a quick, healthy, cheap and simple breakfast

Hallmark Cards at Publix - Saved 44%

I had to go by Publix to return some bad nectarines that I purchased yesterday ( First time I have ever had anything bad at Publix). My return went very smoothly and I also had to pick up a b-day card for a co-worker. While on the card aisle, I found a tear pad with B1G1 Hallmark coupons up to a $2.49 value. I only needed one card but heck if one more would be free then I am good with that!

I went to the cash register and it so happens that the man who processed my return was also checking people out. I handed over my 2 cards (one was $3.69 and one was $1.99) and then I handed him my coupon which was good for up to $2.49. Well, instead of taking the lowest price card off when he rang it, he took $2.49 off my purchase. He did this since I had to bring my fruit back, this is why I love Publix!

Long story short, total before coupon was $6.21, total after coupon was $3.49 so I saved 44% . If you are in need of a card, Publix is the place to go.

Never go grocery shopping with your (hungry) husband!

I am honestly trying to do much better on my grocery budget but it was blown out of the water today. Hubby and I needed to visit Lowe's and Ross for a couple of items, since Publix was in the same vicinity I suggested that we run in for a couple of staples for the week. My intention was to pick up bread, nectarines, bananas, lemons and nothing more. Here is what we left with:

Nectarines (1.78lb @ 1.49/lb = 2.65)

Wesson - $2.00 (now this is a good deal and we were running low but I should have looked for a coupon)

Publix Light Wheat Bread - $1.69 - yes, I know there was a coupon that made Nature's Pride 85 cents but I prefer Publix bread.

Lemons (2 @ 3 for 1.29 = .86)

Bananas (1.35lb @ .53/lb = .72)

Fruit Salad  - 2.71

3 Smart Ones Meals ( 3 x 1.95 = 5.85)

Challah Round Bread - 2.49 (should have used my bread machine)

Single serve Publix Pomegranate/Orange tea - .75 (we already had brewed tea at home)

Quaker Chewy Bar - 1.50 (this is a good deal but I am certain that I had a coupon)

1/2 American Sub = 5.09 (he had a craving)

1/2 Roast Beef Sub = 5.09 (I followed along with his craving)

Eggs - 1.19

Penny Item = Coffee (taking it to a coworker)

Total before ad prices = 49.13

Total OOP = 39.77

I only saved 20% today but I have to post this to keep myself on track. I must not let this happen again! I learned my lesson. I love my hubby dearly but he just isnt as frugal as I am.

On a brighter note, we needed a comforter so we went to Ross. I snagged a comforter set for $24.99 plus tax. Normal retail value was $60.00! We also scored a deal on air filters at Lowe's. $5.97 for 3, normal price $7.97!

Clinique Bonus Time

I just noticed a banner on Facebook --- Clinique Bonus Time is going on now through 9/27/09 at Dillards. Clinique is the only makeup I use --- I always time my purchase around Bonus Time. I generally purchase 2 SuperFit foundations in order to take advantage of the freebies.

Sear's Savings (Juniors)

I used a $10 off any juniors purchase from the following link: http://www.sears.com/ue/clth/link_jrfashion_coupon.pdf

I went to my local Sears and planned on using 2 of the $10 coupons in 2 different transactions. The first transaction was $2.82 after I used the coupon to purchase a pair of juniors dress pants and a cardigan. I did have some trouble at the register, the lady said the register was telling her the coupon was expired. She agreed the coupon wasn't expired and then she said the coupon could only be used online. I pointed out that it said if you cant scan the coupon then enter the code. She had to call a manager over to force the coupon through the system.

My second transaction was for 2 shirts, I ended up not hitting the $10 mark so I went ahead and purchased the items anyways since I had made a fuss with the first transaction - I paid $9.16 after tax. All in all, $12 (rounded up) isn't too shabby for a pair of nice dress pants, cardigan and 2 shirts!

I know that I cant wear the clothes now but hopefully I can use them after the baby comes. I bought size 9 pants even though I was a 5 before becoming pregnant. I figure these can serve as my in-between clothes until I can fit into my regular clothes. Even if they are too big, too small or don't look right, I can always give them to my niece or my sister so no loss here.

Harris Teeter Triples (Saved 85%)

OOH WEE, I have become addicted to couponing thanks to HT!! I purchased $45 worth of stuff for only $7, that's an amazing 85% savings! Here's what I got:

3 Welch's grape jelly (1 jar and 2 squeezies)
1 Viva Big Roll
3 Glass Plus spray cleaners
1 Spray n Wash
1 Sure deodorant
2 boxes of Curad bandages
2 cans of Dole pineapple chunks
1 Kikoman Teriyaki
1 KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce
2 Mt Olive Pickles
1 Suave body wash (Cocoa Butter for my pregnant belly)
1 Dial foaming hand wash

I think that I miscalculated the cost somewhere because I was shocked to have walked out paying as much as I did. I cant figure out if I did something, if HT was the culprit or a combination of the 2 of us. Anyways, 85% savings is pretty darn good so I wont be stressing. I think that I am well stocked on glass cleaner for quite some time. I kind of felt guilty walking out of there with so little OOP! I need to put another game plan together for a trip again this week. I was able to put my preliminary list together thanks to http://www.southernsavers.com/2009/09/harris-teeter-ultimate-triples-916/ I love triples and I love SouthernSavers.com!!

Publix Trip

Woo-hoo!!!! I just scored 4 bottles of HE All Small and Mighty for $1.59 each at Publix. They are on sale for B1G1 and I had 4 $1 off coupons for a final price $1.59 ea!!! If I could have printed more coupons, I would have but the site limits you to 2 and I only have access to 2 different computers. I was very happy to have an HE machine today, the regular detergent was wiped out.

I bought a few other items while at Publix so my overall savings was 50% today, not bad for a newbie :) I also snagged a penny item (tortilla chips).

Healthy Dinner

Well, I said I was going to cook healthier and post my meals on here. Here is tonight's menu:

Salad with home-made balsamic vinaigrette

Herb Rubbed Pork Chops

Twice Baked potatoes --- used Havarti cheese so my meal wasn't entirely process free but pretty darn close!

Corn on the Cob

Best estimate for cost per serving: $3 -- I had many of the items around the house before deciding to coupon so I cant really tell. My meals should become cheaper per serving as I getter better at this.

CVS Deal

I made an impromptu visit to CVS today and scored the following great buys:

2 containers of Mom's Best Naturals quick cooking oats - $1 (used two .75 coupons for final price .25 ea) Can be printed: http://www.momsbestnaturals.com/blog/2009/03/moms-best-naturals-printable-coupons/ You can find this product on the dollar deal aisle - unfortunately, there is a limit of 2 coupons per IP address so use multiple computers if you can.

Colgate toothpaste - $2.99 (used $1 coupon for final price $1.99) This item earned $2.00 ECBs.

My total was $2.95 and I received $2 in ECBs so I pretty much spent .95!

This is the first time that I have taken advantage of ECBs, I am going to experiment with this to see how much I can rack up. My grand plan is to keep a rolling stash of ECBs to offset the cost of diapers ( only 90 more days until I will be needing those).

Publix Trip (Saved 34.5%)

Well, I just came back from Publix with my healthier options --- still didn't get 100% healthy stuff . This limited the number of coupons that I could use but I will be healthier for it. Here are some of the deals:

Healthy Choice Entrees$2.50/ea x 3 = $7.50 (used three $2 off coupons for final cost $1.50)

Green Giant Fresh Steamer - regular price $1.99 (used a .50 coupon for final price .99)

Green Giant frozen veggies $1 ea x 2 (used one .50 coupon for final price of .50 ea)

Lenders Whole Grain Bagels B1G1 (bought one for .90---- no coupons)

Charmin 6 roll tissue on sale for $2.99 ( had one coupon from a home mailer - final price = $1.99)

Glade large soy candle - regular price $4.49 (used one coupon from a home mailer for final price $1.49) - Note: could have gotten a smaller candle for free but I didnt like the choices.

G2 drinks (for hubby) on sale at $1 ea x 3 = $3

Publix Vanilla Wafers - Penny item (saved $1.98)

Other items for this trip included nectarines, peaches, lemons, sweet onions, green onions, eggs. coffee, bananas, pork chops, spaghetti sauce, potatoes, dip and lunch meat for hubby.

Total before savings and coupons: $91.90
Saved: $31.68
Total OOP: $60.22
Total Saved: 34.5%

Not a huge savings but I did save. I did come home with 6 of the huge recycle bags full of stuff. Considering that my past trips to Publix (before couponing) always totaled well above $100, I feel pretty darn good about this trip. I will post later about the meals I plan to make this week.

First Green Edition (Kroger)

Welcome fellow frugalist! I am on a mission to save some serious cash while shopping for groceries. Each week will be a challenge and hopefully I will save tons of money as time progresses. Right off of the bat, things will be a little slow as I am learning how to save some serious green.

With this first edition, I would like to share some Kroger deals (ending today). I went to my local Kroger's last night and saved 45.6% on my groceries. Here is a breakdown of what I got (only listing the rock bottom sales price and coupon price):

3 packages of shredded cheese ($1.25 ea x 3 = $3.75)
4 bottles of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce ($1 ea x 4 = $4)
1 pack of hot dog buns
2 (3) pack bars of Dial soap (.35 ea x 2 =.70)
1 Purex HE Detergent ($1.25)
2 peaches
1 lemon
1 Purity French Onion Dip
1 Lays Wavy Chips ($1.99)
1 Hefty fresh extend zipper bags (.25)
1 can Kroger baked beans
1 can Mighty Dog dog food (free)
1 can Kroger biscuits ($1)
1 box Duncan Hines Brownie Mix ($1)
1 bag of walnuts

Total Before Coupons and Sale Price: $45.43
Total: $24.71
Saved: $20.72 (45.6%)

I am especially proud of my Purex deal. Anyone that has an HE washer knows that detergent can come with a hefty price and until recently, most stores excluded it from sales. $1.25 for laundry detergent suits me just fine!

Here is a list of scorable goodies from Kroger, remember that the sale ends today. I plan on posting the new week's deals by Monday.
